What a surprise I had when I started taking down the Christmas decorations this January. A green hummingbird kept flittering around my head making her funny hummingbird clicking noises. I was accustomed to hummingbirds flying close to me out in the yard, but here I was, up on a ladder, right by the house. I soon found the cause of her concern. A tiny nest was under construction - firmly attached to one of the hanging decorations. Aha! This gave me a great excuse to put the ladder away and leave the decorations up for another month. Of course I took numerous photos. I have tried here to show only the best. The babies never seemed concerned at all by me poking the camera in their faces. They must have been curious at seeing humans for the first time. |
Mother pays a visit.
Waiting for dinner.
The string anchors were added one day when it was
quite windy. I was afraid they might fall out.
Still waiting. Still hungry.
I wish he would leave so we can eat.
Out for a stroll around the nest.
It's a long way down. How does she
expect us to get out of here?
Ah! Dinner at last.
Receiving final flight training.
One last meal.
And one final portrait.
About two weeks later, look who showed up
at the hummingbird feeder! He sat there and
waited patiently while I ran into the house
for the camera, and one more photo.
